"Haiti: The Rhythms, The Dances, and
The Gods''
Carnegie Hall, Friday, May 23, 2003 at 8:00
PM.
This historical/cultural dramatization will
depict two hundred years
of freedom and a glimpse at the next two hundred years,
in homage
to our heroes. The event will feature a multiplicity of
talents, such as:
Danny Glover, as Toussaint Louverture -the precursor of
Haiti's independence-, Emeline Michel, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon
(NYPD Blue) as Suzanne Louverture, James Germain, Erna Letemps,
Jean Claude Eugene, and Kiskeya:
The Haitian Orchestra led by Jean Jean-Pierre.
Coming from Haiti to participate in this grandiose
festivity: the truly exceptional Aykodans Dance Co. Directed
by internationally renowned choreographer Jeanguy Saintus
and Drummer Mapou Azor who will be showcased with two other
Haitian Master Drummers of the New York metro area: the
wonderful Friztner Augustin, winner of the National Endowment
for the Arts Award and the incomparable Bonga.
Additionally, Japanese violinist Kimiko Nakazawa
will come from
Japan to participate in this salute to the birth of our
national and
international symbol of freedom.
This cultural festivity will be the kick off
a series of events
culminating in the commemoration of Haiti's independence
bicentennial
in the year 2004.
