(middle) | Beginning
five years ago, the Miss Tropical Paradise Pageant was developed to
showcase the many talents and accomplishments of women throughout the Caribbean,
South America, the United States, and Africa. The principal objective of the "Miss
Tropical Paradise Pageant" is to uplift the images of Caribbean women and
to foster strong communication skills among all women regardless of their cultural
background. The
pageant was launched in 1999 by Marcia Deans, president of MVD Entertainment.
A former model and dancer, Ms. Deans has been working in the fashion industry
since she was 12 years old. Proceeds from the Miss Tropical Paradise
Pageant are generated in the Caribbean through other related events and
activities, and a portion of the proceeds is donated to a greater humanitarian
cause; finding a cure for diabetes. According to the Center for Disease Control,
more than 7% of the adult population in the United Stated is affected by diabetes
and 600,000 new cases are reported each year. NIDDM (Non-insulin-dependent diabetes
mellitus) is even more common in the elderly and in minority populations including
Caribbean American, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian and Pacific Island
Americans, and Native American.
