Yele Haiti/ComCEL: Gonaives Schools to Apply for Funding

Launched in Haiti less than one month ago by hip hop Haitian legend Wyclef Jean and wireless service provider ComCEL, Yéle Haiti is already underway to award 3,600 scholarships to children in Gonaives. The scholarships are being funded by ComCEL. Government supported schools in Haiti are rare, which means that if children want to go to school, they have to pay tuition. In a country where there is an 80% unemployment rate, most families cannot afford to pay the $55 per student per year tuition. This has resulted in an illiteracy rate of 50% in Haiti. Children in Haiti want to go to school. Yéle Haiti and ComCEL are making it possible.

Yéle Haiti's focus is in four areas: education, health, environment and entrepreneurship. The goal is to combine music with sustainable development programs to provide the youth of Haiti and the Diaspora with the tools to help them chart a new course for the future.

Starting today, Yéle Haiti is launching a call to action to invite school directors in Gonaive to apply for scholarships for their school. We will ultimately provide scholarships for 70 schools in total with blocks of 50-60 students per school and renovations for 20 schools. The recipients will be announced in the first week of March.

If you know a school director in Gonaives, please spread the word. The applications process will start Monday, February 14 and end Monday, February 22.

Yéle!
