Haiti Eyes, a Photo Exhibit by Daniel Morel
By Tequila Minsky, Heritagekonpa Magazine
A
photo exhibit of 45 images taken in Haiti by photographer Daniel Morel are on
display at Labyrinth Bookstore, 536 W. 112th between Broadway and Amsterdam in
Manhattan.
This photojournalistic exhibition entitled Haiti Eyes focuses on the tumultuous and often violent times and events of the last 3 years in Haiti. The exhibition is divided into four segments (subject areas).
Ouster (Segment 1) depicts demonstrations and various conflicts, and the posturing of the camouflaged-clad rebels leading up to the February 2004 expulsion of President Aristide. Desperate Belief (Segment 2) includes religion and practice photographs. These photos are a welcome respite amidst the others cruel realities. In these images practitioners and spiritual practices are portrayed, sacred mud bathing, vodouists prayer and offerings and also images of other religious pilgrims are displayed.
Many heart-wrenching photos of gang violence and UN activity make up Violence in the third segment. Aggression and its aftermath cross all paths. The final segment is called In Dependence, an irony of the word independence. Dependence on outsiders (for aid, food, help) is a frequent state of need for many impoverished Haitians. In these images, those here asking for help are victims this time of nature--the flood and hurricane that befell Haiti in 2004.
Labyrinth Bookstore co-founder/owner Chris Doeblin believes this is the most compelling exhibition the bookstore has ever had. It's extraordinary because the photos are so strong and powerful. Its the first show weve had that is pure photojournalism. Weve had other exhibitions focused on issues: photo essays on aging, urban decay, the subways. With this exhibit people study the photos and follow the story lines. They want to understand where the photos are coming from, whats going on in Haiti.
